Mauritius – relaxing and adventurous at the same time
Among the most famous destinations around the world, Mauritius offers more than just the possibility of an unwind type holiday at the tropics. Lush vegetation comes along with sugarcane and tea crops, multicultural influences spotted in the local cuisine as well, endemic birds and animals and, undeniably, fine sand beaches and sapphire-blue lagoons. All these are ingredients for a remarkable experience.
Even Mark Twain, captivated by the beauty of this island, declared that “Mauritius was made first and then heaven; and heaven was copied after Mauritius”.
The Arab sailors were the first ones who anchored their boats here around 975, followed by the Portuguese, the Dutch, the French sailors and, in the end, by the British. Today, Mauritius is an independent country, having one of the most developed economies among African countries. Locals are fluent in English, French, Creole, and other dialects as well such as Hindi. Most people are Hindu joined by the Christians. Therefore, you can celebrate here the Christmas or other foreign holidays such as Diwali, one of the most important Hindu holidays.
As you can already guess, Mauritian cuisine is also a big surprise for the tourists. It will amaze you with its Indian, African, Chinese, Creole, and European blend. Typical condiments are not to be missed from the main plates, and local tea, harvest on this island, is fresh and flavored.
Paradise beaches and turquoise waters
The main island, which bears the name of the archipelago, is surrounded by lagoons and beaches that stretch along the entire coast. Regardless of the season, you will not miss the bliss of swimming or the water activities. The east coast is unmissable, and a boat trip to the famous Île aux Cerfs will convince you why Mauritius is among the favorite destinations around the world. On the way there you can also stop for a snorkeling session or swimming with dolphins.
On the east coast, but further south, you have the Blue Bay, which, as its name suggests, is a small bay with clear waters popular among the locals for the family activities. Exactly at the opposite end, precisely on the southwestern part of the island, is Le Morne Beach. Perhaps this is the “signature” of the island. A mountain range rises from the ocean and imposes itself on this side of the coast. This is the symbol of the slaves’ liberation who were brought to the island during the colonial times. Beyond the stories of the locals, the view is fascinating and turns this beach into a unique place in the world. Moreover, the entire Le Morne peninsula has been an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Among the beaches listed above, we also mention Tamarin beach or Mont Choisy beach.
Inland adventurous activities
If you want to alternate the beach activities with some more adventurous ones, then you have picked the ideal destination. We recommend you rent a car and set off. Grab your GPS and get your camera ready. Impressive waterfalls like Chamarel Waterfall or The Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark await you.
Don’t miss the 6500-hectare Black River Gorges National Park which is home to endemic birds and animals, the Labourdonnais Castle, which preserves its 19th-century architecture, the tea crops such as the Bois Cheri Tea factory where you can taste dozens of tea flavors, the botanical garden or the capital, Port Louis, where you can visit temples, restaurants, local boutiques or the famous local market where you can find fresh fish and exotic fruits.
